Autistic people are born with differences that affect how their brain develops and processes the world around them. It can affect how someone communicates, makes sense of social situations, uses play, and responds to sounds, lights, touch, or changes in routine.

Autistic people might find it harder to understand body language or social rules, may prefer predictable routines, and often have strong interests or repetitive behaviours that help them feel comfortable and in control.

Autism is a spectrum, which means each autistic individual has their own unique set of strengths and weaknesses.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person regulates attention, activity level, and impulses. People with ADHD may find it harder to sustain attention on tasks that are repetitive or not immediately interesting, may become easily distracted, or may struggle with organisation and time management. For some, ADHD also involves higher levels of physical restlessness and impulsivity, while others experience daydreaming, drifting off, or being slow to get started.

Global Developmental Delay (GDD) causes individuals to experience delays and difficulties in cognitive functioning, communication and motor skills. Children with GDD may require extra time and support to develop skills like speech, movement, play, learning, and self-care. GDD is often identified during a child’s early stages of development where the delay is noticeable for more than six months.

It describes the child’s current pattern of development when they are still too young for more specific testing, and it helps families and professionals plan early support while more is learned over time about the child’s strengths and needs.

Intellectual disability is a developmental disorder that affects thinking skills like learning, problem‑solving, and reasoning alongside challenges in everyday life skills such as communication, self‑care, social participation, and managing daily routines.

Specific learning difficulties are brain‑based differences that affect a child’s ability to develop skills in one or more academic areas like reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or maths (dyscalculia).

These learning profiles are lifelong, but with early identification, tailored teaching strategies, and appropriate accommodations, children can build on their strengths and learn in ways that work for them. Because these conditions often co‑occur, a comprehensive learning assessment can help clarify the pattern of strengths and challenges and guide support at school, work, and home.

Anxiety and depression are common emotional health conditions that affect a child’s mood, thinking, and behaviour, and can interfere with everyday life.

Anxiety involves strong worries or fears that are hard to control and may show up as clinginess, avoidance, irritability, trouble sleeping, or physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches. Depression involves ongoing low mood, irritability, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.

Many different factors can contribute to anxiety and depression, and they usually arise from a mix of biology, psychology, and life experience rather than a single cause. Both conditions are linked to changes in brain chemistry and stress‑response systems, which can make some people more vulnerable, especially when combined with ongoing life pressures.

A seizure is a sudden event where bursts of abnormal electrical activity in the brain temporarily change a person’s movement, awareness, behaviour, or sensations. They can cause individuals to lose consciousness but can also occur when an individual is conscious and aware.

Epilepsy is the name used when a person has a tendency to have unprovoked seizures over time, and this can affect safety, learning, and participation until seizures are well understood and managed.

A genetic disorder is a health condition caused by changes in a person’s genes or chromosomes, which can affect how the body and brain grow and work.

These conditions can lead to a wide range of differences, such as physical features, medical problems, developmental delays, or learning difficulties, and they may be present from birth or become noticeable as the child grows.

Dyspraxia, often called developmental coordination difficulties (DCD) is a brain-based motor disorder that begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It causes challenges with gross-motor skills and fine-motor skills, and can also affect motor-planning, organisation and speech.

Children with these motor coordination difficulties may often bump into things, drop objects, or experience difficulties in tasks like running, using cutlery, writing, dressing, riding a bike, or catching a ball.

An acquired brain injury damage sustained to the brain that happens after birth, for example from a fall, accident, infection, stroke, or lack of oxygen.
